Do You Have A Slow Metabolism

A slow metabolism is often seen as the cause of excessive weight gain but in reality most people have a normal metabolism and the reasons for being overweight lie elsewhere. Slow metabolism is essentially when the body is inefficient in dealing with food that is consumed. Thus the body doesn't get the true value in terms of energy or nutrients and the person has to consume more. The end result of this process is weight gain. While there are ways to increase the speed and intensity of one’s metabolism, the fact of the matter is that the concept of a slow metabolism as the cause of over weight or obesity is generally a myth.

There are instances where people have a slow metabolism but this is generally due to conditions like an under active thyroid or other problems with the endocrine system. In these cases, weight will be put on because the enzymes that control and process foods are not working properly. This is a serious condition and needs to be treated by a doctor. Once identified the condition can be treated with medication.

However most people that are obese or overweight do not suffer from this problem. They are simply misinformed or confused about why they are gaining weight.

The major cause of obesity is a poor lifestyle. This include a sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise. Exercise is vital to burn off excess calories that may be consumed during the day and also to keep the body ticking over.

A poor diet is another aspect of poor lifestyle choices. If a diet is high in calories and fat but low in fresh food and fiber then a person will gain weight. Obese people become obese generally because they have taken in far too many calories than they burn. It is a simple equation.

If their diet is so poor that they are eating 1,500 extra calories a day than they actually need, then the problem is not a slow metabolism. There is no way anyone could have a metabolism that burns up an excess of 1,500 calories without plenty of cardiovascular exercise or strength training.

An individual who believes that a body at rest will burn an insane amount of calories simply does not understand how the body’s metabolism works or what the relationship between food intake and calorie expenditure is. This does not mean that they are not intelligent, just that they are either misinformed or not properly educated on the subject and how it relates to a slow metabolism.

As with many aspects of good health, a good diet and regular exercise are the key to maintain the body's condition and preventing disease and ill-health.
